Las Tintoreras is one of the most iconic visitor sites on Isabela Island and an excellent choice for travelers looking to discover the extraordinary biodiversity of the Galápagos Islands through a short and accessible excursion.
This small volcanic islet remains largely untouched and is home to a remarkable variety of species found throughout the archipelago. Its name comes from the whitetip reef sharks, locally known as “tintoreras,” which are often seen resting in a narrow channel formed by ancient lava flows. This unique natural formation creates calm waterways that have become one of the most famous places in Galápagos to observe these fascinating sharks in their natural habitat.
The excursion begins at the Puerto Villamil dock, where guests board the boat for a short navigation of approximately 10 minutes to the islet.
The main activity of the tour is a snorkeling session in the waters surrounding the islet. Depending on the conditions of the day, guests may encounter sea lions, sea turtles, rays, whitetip reef sharks, tropical fish, starfish, and a wide variety of marine life.
Las Tintoreras is also one of the best places in the Galápagos Islands to observe the Galápagos penguin, one of the archipelago’s most iconic and unique species.
After snorkeling, guests will enjoy a guided walk along the authorized trails of the islet. During the walk, it is common to observe marine iguanas resting on the volcanic rocks, coastal birds, and the famous lava channel where whitetip reef sharks are frequently seen resting.
The area is also an important nesting site for marine iguanas, providing excellent opportunities for wildlife observation and photography.
At the end of the activities, the tour returns to Puerto Villamil.
